Eros the loosener-of-limbs once again shakes me,

that sweet-bitter, utterly irresistible little beast.

This particular representation of anguish was discussed in Chapter 2, but without reference to the fragment that follows (fr. 131). Hephaestion quotes both passages, without naming a poet, as an example of the same metre. Most editors now separate the pieces, although Eva-Maria Voigt printed them as one poem in her 1971 edition.30 Voigt’s Greek edition would therefore translate as follows:

Eros the loosener-of-limbs once again shakes me,

that sweet-bitter, utterly irresistible little beast.

… Atthis, the thought of me has become hateful to you,

and you flee to Andromeda.
